The Beyond the Locker (BTL) Programs provide an educational framework to sports based life skills that can be integrated into Elementary, Middle and High School settings.  The programs are also designed to enhance community youth programs.  The BTL Programs take the stance that social, emotional and academic development is maximized when combined in the correct environment and delivered by adequately trained facilitators.

There are advantages and challenges of living in an environment where needs are met at touch of a button and a person can access the other side of the world in seconds.  As our world becomes smaller there are more challenges that our youth face.

After World War II, the United States had the #1 high school graduation rate in the world. Today, we have dropped to # 22 among 27 industrialized nations. (OECD, 2012)

Nearly 1 in 3 students (27.8%) report being bullied during the school year (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2013).

Rising divorce rates and dual working parents leave a lot of youth to navigate their after school life themselves.

Who is helping our youth navigate through education and life?

Nationwide, one in five high schools lack a counselor. (US Department of Education)

BTL’s programs are largely based on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL).  The core of SEL programming is the focus on developing in youth the capacity to manage, understand, and express the social and emotional aspects of their lives in positive ways that foster learning and successful management of life’s most important tasks.

The core competencies taught and reinforced in successful SEL programming is Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills and responsible decision-making.

Beyond the Locker integrates those core ideas into all of its programming. BTL also emphasizes development of character, team building, leadership and communication skills.
